COLLECTORS GREED?

At one point in our lives we have all collected something in which we thought was valuable or in most cases is valuable. Some of us collect books, CD's, toys, cards, games, movies, clothing, bottle caps, weapons, coins, and other miscellaneous objects. But has anyone ever thought that our collections are a part of our own greed, thus preventing others from having an easy time trying to obtain a product that another individual possesses multiple prints of and has no intention to share? Do I have no clue what I am talking about? Keep reading to find out.

When I was younger my collection was small, I admit that I wasn't even much of a collector until the age of ten. That's when I started collecting Yu-Gi-Oh cards. I stopped collecting between the age of eleven and twelve, as I begun to lose interest in the series. I later gave my cards away to a friend with no regrets, I didn't need them, they weren't worth much to me, so why not give them away? After that I did not begin collecting again until between the ages of fourteen and fifteen. That's when I began to collect video games and CD's.
As of now my collection has improved greatly and I would have never thought it would be the size that it is right now. DVDs, Blu-rays, video games, CD's, books, boxes, posters, key chains, various electronic devices, and much more is what I collect currently, but here is where things get interesting. Do I or anyone else really need to own such a vast amount of products?

For quite some time I've been thinking that being a collector is just being greedy. I never intend to sell anything, I don't care how much it's worth somewhere in the future, I just care about it being a part of my collection even if I don't intend to put it to use. A great example would be my future collection of the video game Catherine for the XBOX 360 and PS3. I plan to own ten (Nine of them are different) copies of the game as they are identically the same game, but do not share the same box art or language, and out of those ten copies I only plan to open three of them.

Right now in the year 2011 it's not difficult to go to your local store and find a copy of "Catherine" for 59.99 or less. But about ten years from now when the game is no longer in production, there is going to be a much higher demand for the game. I however will still have my seven sealed copies and will not be willing to sell them. Does that make me "greedy"? Yes, but as a collector I'll claim the title as "greedy" any day.
